Obituary

Eloy E. Martinez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, deacon, author, and community leader, passed away peacefully at his home in El Duende, New Mexico, on June 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Taos, New Mexico, Eloy was the cherished son of Eloy V. Martinez and Onofre M. Martinez. Throughout his life, he embodied the values of faith, service, education, and compassion. His unwavering commitment to helping others and strengthening communities left an enduring mark across Northern New Mexico and beyond.

Eloy was a respected educator and public figure whose life's work was dedicated to empowering others through knowledge, opportunity, and service. He made significant contributions to the communities of Northern New Mexico through his leadership in establishing health clinics, developing adult basic education programs, and organizing the distribution of food, clothing, and other daily necessities to individuals and families during times of need. He believed deeply in the dignity of every person and worked tirelessly to create opportunities for those who faced barriers to health, education, and economic security.

A faithful servant of God, Eloy served as an educator and Deacon at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church for over six decades. Through his ministry, he offered spiritual guidance, comfort, and encouragement to countless individuals and families. He was a prolific writer and gifted public speaker whose thoughtful reflections on faith, spirituality, and religious life inspired audiences throughout New Mexico and beyond. Whether preaching from the pulpit, teaching in the classroom, or sharing his writings, Eloy possessed a remarkable ability to connect faith with everyday life and to help others discover meaning, hope, and purpose.

Eloy's love of education and his passion for sharing his faith found a unique expression through international travel. Over the course of his life, he designed and led more than twenty educational and spiritual tours to Europe and the Holy Land. These journeys brought together people from diverse backgrounds to experience some of the world's most magnificent cathedrals, sacred sites, artistic treasures, historic landmarks, music, and local cultures. Drawing upon his extensive knowledge of religion, history, architecture, art, and culture, Eloy served not merely as a guide but as a teacher and storyteller. Participants often described these tours as transformative experiences that deepened their understanding of the world, enriched their appreciation of faith and culture, and created lifelong friendships. Through these journeys, Eloy helped countless travelers see the connections between history, spirituality, beauty, and human experience.

Above all else, Eloy was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha G. Martinez, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, faith, and partnership. He also leaves behind his eight children: Barbara Nannini (husband Michael), Joseph F. Martinez (wife Susan), Michael D. Martinez (wife Renee), Eleanor Limbaugh (husband Christopher), Paul Martinez, Eloy Martinez (wife Sara), Carlos Martinez (wife Theresa), and John Martinez (wife Flora), and grandchildren Joshua, Shana, Justin, Savannah, Roberto, Megan, Nicholas, Georgia, Bryan, Daniel, John Christopher, Amelia, and great-grandchildren Benny, Elijah, Camille and Athena. He is also survived by his sister Carla Stribling. His family was his greatest joy and the center of his life. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and treasured every opportunity to gather with them, share stories, celebrate milestones, and create lasting memories.

Those who knew Eloy will remember his generous spirit, intellectual curiosity, gentle wisdom, and warm sense of humor. He was a man of deep conviction and boundless compassion, equally comfortable discussing theology, history, literature, music, or current events. He inspired others not only through his words but through a life lived in service to God and neighbor. His kindness, leadership, and dedication touched countless lives and enriched every community of which he was a part.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eloy V. Martinez and Onofre M. Martinez. Though he has departed this earthly life, Eloy's legacy endures in the institutions he helped build, the programs he championed, the faithful he served, the travelers he guided, the readers and listeners he inspired, and most importantly, the family he loved so deeply. His life stands as a testament to the power of faith, education, service, and love.

The Martinez family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, support, and condolences during this time of loss.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

May Deacon Eloy E. Martinez rest in the peace of Christ, embraced by God's eternal love and reunited with those who have gone before him. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
