Jose (Tony) Antonio Anchondo, a proud native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 20, 2026.

Born on May 11, 1945, to Francisco C. Anchondo and Susana Molinar-Anchondo, Tony was the youngest of ten children. He was raised with strong family values that guided him throughout his life.

Tony was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School. He dedicated 25 years of service to the State of New Mexico, retiring as the highest-ranking correctional officer (Colonel) in New Mexico at the time. He led with integrity, strength, and commitment, earning the respect of colleagues and the community. Following retirement, Tony worked for Toyota of Santa Fe for many years building lasting friendships with coworkers and customers. He always left a wonderful impression on everyone he came across.

Tony loved to dance, especially with his wife, granddaughters and family! He was an avid hunter, fisherman, enjoying the outdoors with his sons. Tony found peace in nature, camping every chance with family while his children grew up. Above all, and more than anything, Tony loved his family, cherished life, and valued the friendships he built throughout the years. His steady presence, humor, and devotion to those he loved will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco C. Anchondo and Susana Molinar-Anchondo; and his siblings Juan Anchondo, Socorro Anchondo, Carmen Petricat, Ramon Anchondo, Francisco “Kiko” Anchondo, Joe Anchondo, and Miguel (Mickey) Anchondo.

Tony is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Eva Anchondo; his siblings Susan Montoya (deceased – Del Montoya) and Enrique (Henry) Anchondo (Tessie Anchondo); his best friend and sister-in-law, Eileen Benavidez; and his five children , nine grandchildren , and nine great-grandchildren:

Joseph Anchondo (Renea Rodriguez), and daughter Sydney Anchondo

Evelyn Anchondo Bankens (Kevin Bankens) and children: Ashlie Bustamante (Ryan Bustamante) and children: Audrina, Rowan, and Axton Bustamante

Kayla Aragon-Eres (Louie Eres) and children: Louie, Lenore, and Niko Eres

Raymond Anchondo (Barbara Anchondo) and daughter: Ashley Kraft (Erich Kraft), children: Jameson and Essek and daughter Kymina Anchondo

Sharon Pino (Richard Pino), son: Gabriel Pino (Alexa Pino), child: Mia and daughter, Maya Pino

Frances Anchondo (Jeff Corwon), children: Jonathon Chavez and Helene Chavez

And many nieces and nephews!


Tony’s legacy of strength, service, and deep love for family will continue to live on through all who knew him.

Services will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Rosary at 9:30am, Mass at 10am, Cristo Rey Church, 1107 Cristo Rey Street, Santa Fe, NM.

Reception in Celebration of Tony’s life, immediately following at FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) 3300 Calle Maria Luisa, Santa Fe, NM.
