Pablo F. Ortega Jr.

January 18, 1953 — December 8, 2025

Our beloved brother, Pablo F. Ortega Jr., was called to his eternal rest on December 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pablo and Camen Ortega and his brother Michael Ortega. He is survived by his siblings Dr. Gloria Rendon (Andrew), John Ortega (Dany Ridler), Rose Rael (Antonio), Daniel Ortega (Julie), Loreen Mendiola (Anthony), Charles Ortega (Darlene), Martha Sisneros (Robert), Linda Ortega, Leroy Ortega, Viola Liesse (Mark) and Alicia Ortega (Jennifer) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pablo was a lifelong resident of Santa Fe where he grew up as the second eldest of 13 siblings. He graduated in 1971 from Santa Fe High where he ran Cross Country throughout his high school years. Pablo enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduation, and when his tour of duty was completed, he enrolled at NM Highlands University obtaining his degree in Special Education. Later, Pablo would also serve in the Army National Guard in Santa Fe.

Pablo spent his entire professional career in the Santa Fe Public Schools teaching children with special needs and coaching track. He was a beloved teacher who was a positive influence in the lives of many children who might not otherwise have experienced success. His interest in special education stemmed from his experience and interaction with our brother Michael who was born with physical and intellectual challenges. Pablo spent much time caring for him during Michael’s last years of life.

From a young age, Pablo was a hard worker providing shoeshines on the plaza on summer weekends and delivering the New Mexican after school for many years. He was an avid reader and could always be found with a book in hand when he wasn’t working or doing chores. He loved science fiction and mystery novels. He loved music and collected many albums over the years. Pablo also loved the outdoors; and camping, fishing and gardening were some of his favorite activities. His greatest love, however, was art. He created several pieces of art including pottery, paintings and jewelry. His hope had always been to be a full-time artist.

Like all of us mortals who travel this earthly life, our brother faced many challenges and obstacles. Despite this, he was always willing to lend a hand when he could. He loved his family deeply, and no one loved him more than our mother. We will miss our brother dearly and request that you remember him in your prayers.
