Ted Starnes

September 19, 1944 — October 6, 2025

Santa Fe

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ted Starnes, affectionately known as “Sonny,” who passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 81.

Ted was born on September 19, 1944, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Ted and Dominica Starnes. He attended Santa Fe High School and continued his education at The College of Santa Fe, where he met his wife, Sophia, the love of his life.

Ted and Sophia shared many years together and raised two sons they were deeply proud of. Though their journey included challenges, their bond endured through the life they built. In their younger years, they loved going out dancing, and in later years, they could often be found side by side at the casino, sharing quiet companionship in their own way.

He was a devoted father who cherished every moment with his sons. He often traveled to Arizona to spend time with them, never missing the chance to be close. With Grayson, he loved going to the movies, sharing quiet routines and laughter. With his son Ted, he enjoyed being outdoors at various lakes - fishing, bantering about life, sports, and who caught the most fish.

As a young father, he attended every baseball and basketball game his boys played - coaching, teaching, and cheering them on with pride.

Professionally, Ted worked as an accountant for the State of New Mexico, where he formed some of his closest lifelong friendships. A man of faith, he was actively involved in the Catholic Church.

If he wasn’t watching his beloved New York Yankees or Dallas Cowboys, you could find Ted at the casino, a place he genuinely enjoyed. He loved the thrill of the slot machines, always with his trademark quiet grin.

Though he did not have grandchildren, Ted found joy in his grand-dogs, Paco and Mocha, who were constant companions and a source of happiness.

Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Dominica Starnes, his sisters Donna and Jeanine, and his nephew David Dye. He is survived by his wife Sophia, his sons Ted (Michele) and Grayson, his nephew Jeff McCarthy (Rita), and his niece Lisa Dye. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Catherine Sisneros, Sara Archuleta, Carmel Owens (Jim); brothers-in-law Rudy, Gerald, and Arnold Sandoval (Tammy); and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

What people will remember most about Ted is his smile; warm, constant, and welcoming. It was the first thing to greet you, and the last thing to leave the room. He will also be remembered for always wanting to do the right thing, often thinking of others he did not know and standing up for them whenever he could.

A Rosary will be held at 10:00 AM, followed by Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on Friday, October 24, 2025. A reception will follow the Mass. Burial will be scheduled at a later date.
